ABP Majha Fiasco

On April 15 a huge mob of around 1000 migrant daily wage workers gathered near Bandra Railway station, thus sparking a huge ruckus among the journalist community. A journalist named Rahul Kulkarni from renowned Marathi news channel ABP Majha was arrested for allegedly giving away fake/false news on his channel. Many journalists came up to support Rahul Kulkarni and oppose governments action.

My take on this entire episode is bit different. What I feel in the first place is that Rahul Kulkarni did give away a news which turned out to be false. He should have been more careful in lockdown situation in a country like India where rumours spread quickly. On this many people argue that why would a non-marathi mob watch a Marathi news channel. This argument is completely baseless because you can't just get away by giving wrong information with full and then argue about whether those people watched the news or not.
In recent we have seen a lot of TV news channel getting away for spreading communalism on the basis of religion which played a huge role in the Delhi riots which broke out earlier this year. Similarly during Maharashtra government formation many vague statements were made by TV news channels. Being a journalism student we had a subject called ethics of journalism in which I learnt that it is extremely crucial to check the information thoroughly before giving it out to the public as it could lead to consequences but what we see today in journalism is complete opposite. I just feel news channels in our country take this action of police seriously and try to improve their credibility.
At last I support this move by the Mumbai police to take actions against fake news running on news channels as it will in some sort make them think twice before making such vague statements on live television.
