Will the 2020 F1 Season be Williams’ Road to Redemption?

After a shaky season in 2018, Williams Racing went through the wringer last year. They finished in the bottom of constructor’s championship for two years straight. In 2019, they secured only a point in the entire season, their worst-ever campaign in F1 history. Also, the team has been facing a financial crisis due to pandemic pressure. To ensure the future of a team that is still one of the most successful in F1, they have open sale talks.

But the start of 2020 season brought some encouragement for them. George Russell has impressed in both rounds at the Red Bull Ring and recorded their first-ever Q2 appearance since 2018. Last weekend, he made it Q2 for the second time in a row, but this time he was joined by his teammate Nicholas Latifi. It was the first instance after Monza 2018 that Williams had both its cars in Q2.

According to deputy team principal Claire Williams, Russell and teammate Nicholas Latifi are bonding well and appearing to enjoy the performance in their FW43s. It is a good sign, considering the issues other F1 teams are facing due to lack of understanding among their drivers. She also went on to say that the performance of the team in the first two races had marked a “turning point” for the British squad.

Last season it was a different picture for Russell and Williams with the team struggling in qualifying, often taking up the final row of the grid. Despite not having secured a point so far, Williams racing has surely taken one step ahead.

In the quest to open their points tally this season, the team has decided to bring an upgrade ahead of the British Grand Prix. Williams does not know precisely how big the advantage of this upgrade is, but they are sure that it is good enough to get in on both cars from the British Grand Prix.

Only time will tell whether Williams have turned a corner towards redemption or not.
